Businesses
There is a strong relationship between work and health Research shows that overall work is good for health. (1 2 ) Good health is equally essential for optimal productivity at work. (3) The average working person in the UK spends about a third of their waking hours working, so it makes sense to consider work when we are looking at health.
I work with both individuals and companies to support health and well-being in the workplace.
My talks and workshops are interactive, light-hearted and fun, whilst delivering important evidence-based health information. My introductory health talk "Law's Little Lifestyle Wins" is me sharing my favourite tips and what I actually do as an ex "fags & booze" doc and busy, working, mum to be healthier and happier. Each talk is tailored to suit your company's needs - it is not very helpful to tell bus drivers to get up and move about every 20 minutes! Why not book a "Law's Little Lifestyle Wins" talk for your next team meeting or away day?
Drivers
I have worked as an occupational health doctor for professional drivers for about 10 years. The science is clear that prolonged sitting and shift work are bad for health. Sedentary and shift work increases the risk of illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and some cancers (4,5). Bus drivers also report higher rates of back, shoulder and neck problems. (6) Did you know that the link between prolonged sitting and heart disease was made when researchers discovered that bus drivers had more and worse heart problems than bus conductors working on the same routes? (7)
I am very grateful to all the professional drivers for the essential services they provide to us all. I work with drivers and bus companies to look at ways to improve the health and well-being of the drivers and other staff.
I am always keen to look at new, different and innovative ways to improve health. I am currently working on an exciting new initiative with a local bus company offering drivers an opportunity to discuss their health with me at their routine DVLA medical appointments. These appointments have been very well received with 94% of drivers rating the appointments as 10/10 extremely useful and 76% of drivers planning to make lifestyle changes because of what we discussed.
The changes Sue suggested were all very achievable... I definitely feel better overall due to an improvement in my sleep. I enjoy doing small movement work throughout the day. Sue was a fantastic support and would adapt to any challenges
